ABOUT US

Final Approach Limited (FAL) was established in 2012 by Alexander Kirby. FAL works in partnership with a select group of leading aviation professionals to develop and implement best practice solutions that ensure airport city and aerotropolis developments are compatible and complimentary to sustainable “smart growth” at and around airports.

AIRPORT CITIES AND AEROTROPOLIS

Airports are now much more than transport centres comprised of runways, taxiways and terminals where passengers simply arrive and depart. Major airports act as key nodes in global production and enterprise systems offering them speed, agility and connectivity. 21st century airports thus play a key role in the economic development and growing prosperity of the surrounding region and the neighbouring cities. The airport acts as a powerful magnet drawing more and more aviation-oriented businesses to locate on the airport campus or in the immediate vicinity. This is the Airport City. The power of this economic engine extends far beyond the airport and its Airport City. Along the major road and rail corridors that radiate from the airport clusters of aviation related businesses and associated residential developments are forming. The accepted term for this new urban form is the Aerotropolis, as described by Professor John D. Kasarda author of ‘Aerotropolis The Way We’ll Live Next’, first published in 2011.

Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone (ZAEZ), Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China

Alex served on the panel of experts who advised the Governor of Henan Province and Mayor of Zhengzhou on the optimal development strategy and selection of architects to undertake the design of the world’s largest airport economic zone. In keeping with China ‘One Belt – One Road’ policy the ZAEZ represents the first of China’s new generation of mega airport economic zones located away from the established industrialised cities on the eastern seaboard. Home to Foxconn’s largest manufacturing facility, where the Apple 6 and 7 phones are famously produced, it represents the first of a new generation of aerotropoli to be rolled out across China.
